With Ligue 1 about to start after the international break, French Champions and Champions League runners-up Paris Saint-Germain are all set to continue the new season against Nîmes. PSG will still be reeling from their defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in August and their slow start to the season. Right now, they must be thinking of how they can pick themselves up and go again – there must be a lot of soul searching going on right now at the Parc des Princes.

Can Thomas Tuchel keep the momentum going and regroup his team in the weeks to come? Will they have enough to mount another Champions League challenge in the coming months – PSG must not be hard on themselves, as no team that has made their first appearance in the Champions League Final has won it on their first go. The question now is what happens next?

Well, the good news is Neymar Jr is not going anywhere… for now. Despite his heartbreak at missing out on European footballs‘ biggest prize, the Brazilian is determined to create history with the French champions. After the final, there were many rumours surrounding the forwards future. However, PSG was quick to secure the superstar’s services and stop any speculation going into the new season.

Neymar told PSG’s official magazine that ‘I’m staying at PSG next season! And with the ambition to return to the Champions League final, this time to win it.’ He went on to say that ‘I like the idea of doing everything to leave my name in the history books of my club.’ It is important that PSG keep Neymar focused,he is vital to their Champions League ambitions.

One of the biggest problems facing Paris Saint-Germain was the departure of club captain Tiago Silva to Chelsea. This is sure to give Thomas Tuchel a major headache during the season. Silva was the bedrock of the PSG defense, and it is hard to see how he will be replaced. He was the player that other players in the backline looked to when the going got tough.

So, who will come in to fill this gap in defense? It looks like that PSG will have to go shopping for a new central defender. It will not be easy to find a player who is able to read the game like Silva. Some of the names of likely successors include Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar and Liverpool’s Joël Matip. Both would be great signings, but they will have big boots to fill if they decide to head to the Parc des Princes.

Overall, PSG needs some fresh blood. It does seem that Edinson Cavani’s run at PSG has come to an end after his move to Manchester Utd. . There is an argument that Mauro Icardi should be stepping in as the main point man for PSG. Especially after last season’s impressive form – Icardi was in the free-scoring mode for PSG. Perhaps if he were slotted in between Neymar and Mbappe, he could provide PSG with more potency up front.
