We would like to take this moment to thank our new advertisers, who, while not quite providing us with the scratch to enable a husband to quit his job, still come through with the equivalent of very good pair of shoes and a fish taco each month. They are:

England has always reveled in its drawing-room dramas, from Jane Austen’s social minefields to E.M. Forster’s Howards End to Upstairs, Downstairs — and yes, the blockbuster Downton Abbey. John Lanchester’s brilliant Capital, set on a once-ordinary London block whose housing prices have skyrocketed, has the distinction of being the first brick-and-mortar novel set squarely in our current times.
I’d suggest that anyone who liked “The Squid and the Whale” would be interested in reading Jonathan Baumbach’s recently published collection of new and selected stories, On the Way to My Father’s Funeral. It is a terrific book by a writer who has long deserved to be better known.
